The Navarre medieval society from XV, XVI and XVII centuries was characterized by its cultural and religious political differences (agramonteses-beamonteses civil war, conquest of the Kingdom of Navarra, Castilla, …) (in these valleys beliefs and pagan mythology before the arrival of Christianity).
These factors were perfectly exploited by the “jauntxos” (both civil and religious lines) to create witchcraft accusations and fear among the residents.
The isolation of this place facilitated the conservation of theories of devil worship, as reflected in documents of the time.
In 1328 Malerreka was cited in the first evidence of witchcraft in Navarre.
This route will lead us through the steps of herbalists and midwives , which since ancient times, and having as a protective mother nature , beliefs and myths ( Mari, Akerbeltz , …) and spiritual sources , lead us to the place of Sorginzelaia ( field of witchcraft ) . With clear echoes of myth and sorcery .
We should return for an inaccessible valley where water and vegetation have a high degree of conservation, featuring the abundant herbal materials (plants and animals for their night, according to their pagan beliefs).
Once back in the village, follow the steps Inquisitor Don Alonso de Salazar Frías and that during his visit to the town in 1611 (with the Edict of Grace) did place a beautiful stone cross in the place where, since ancient times, took place the akelarres (meeting holiday, life and joy).
